In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in Los Angeles; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in California are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.

Los Angeles is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around Los Angeles is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Amazing spot!! The atmosphere is super vibey with the red-lit lanterns and cozy booth seating. Every dish we ordered was delicious, but the standouts were definitely the orange chicken, fried rice, and green beans. We also loved the Szechuan chicken, beef and broccoli, egg rolls, and chicken chow mein. The cocktails were just as impressive, with fun presentation and great flavor. A special shoutout to Tess, who made our experience even better. She was incredibly friendly, attentive, and gave fantastic recommendations that did not disappoint. Between the amazing food, fun drinks, and outstanding service from Tess, this is a place weβll absolutely be coming back to!

What a great evening. We had a group of 13. The team at Genghis Cohen were terrific. From the moment we walked, we were greated by the warm and friendly hostesses. Our servers were very accommodating and made wonderful recommendations. The Mai Tai was beautiful and not too sweet. The dumplings, Volcano Chicken, crab rangoon and New York style egg rolls were stand outs. Highly recommend!

I was actually really surprised that I liked this place, but the vibes and food were good. Everything came out super fast and hot and we especially loved the Malaysian chow fun.

It announces itself in red, walls, light, energy, pulling you into a version of Chinese American dining that feels nostalgic and cinematic. Transportive in the way good restaurants often are. You sit down in Los Angeles and suddenly you feel somewhere else entirely. The wonton soup arrives steaming and deeply soothing. Bok choy adds freshness, turkey wontons are delicate, and the broth does exactly what itβs meant to do: comfort. Vegetable dumplings follow, solid and dependable, carried by an excellent dumpling sauce. The kung pao chicken is aromatic and warming, though restrained on spice, while the shrimp fried rice is well prepared. Then comes the black pepper beef. Juicy slices of beef coated in a peppery sauce. The garlic bok choy is cooked to that spot where the stems retain a crunch while the leaves soften into the sauce. It is aggressively garlicky, as it should be. Some dishes shine brighter than others, but thatβs the trade-off with a menu this expansive. Genghis Cohen is about delivering the hearty, semi-greasy Chinese American food you came here for. On that front, it succeeds.
